Literacy Club

Are you a school leader interested in hosting one of our award-winning, literacy after-school clubs? Find out more with our frequently asked questions below.

What is involved in a T W Literacy after-school club?

Our literacy after-school clubs are award-winning, small group classes tailored to the needs of the group of children attending the club working on core literacy skills. With a focus on creative writing, our highly skilled and experienced teachers skilfully weave in handwriting, spelling, punctuation and grammar practice. These sessions are fantastic to help support your children’s learning goals and weave in weekly extra literacy practice.

Each session begins with handwriting and spelling practice based on statutory spellings and the topic for each child’s year group. The main section then moves on to cover a weekly theme such as the circus, holidays, space, pets, parties, the jungle and even technology. All session plans are based on the National Curriculum and focus on genres such as story writing, letter writing, news reports, poetry, non-chronological reports, persuasive texts and much more. To complete the session, the children will share their work and ideas and have a go at a weekly riddle. With stickers, star or the week, certificates and rewards galore, literacy club is also a great way to improve each child’s confidence with reading and writing.

Where and when are the clubs based?

Our clubs are based in schools in unused classrooms or spaces and typically run for an hour straight after school on a day that suits both the school and the teacher running the club. This offers the school extra rental income for their unused space.

Do you have the necessary registrations and qualifications?

Yes, of course! Our clubs all have the necessary insurances (public liability, employers liability and professional indemnity) and our teachers carry enhanced DBS checks with First Aid and Safeguarding qualifications (all necessary safer recruitment checks are also carried out). All of our appropriate policies are sent across to schools to ensure we are KELSI compliant.

Who completes all the admin involved in setting up and running the club?

We do! Our head office team are not only responsive to any requests for paperwork or register information from schools but we are also proactive in ensuring all of the necessary paperwork and information is in place beforehand. All of the booking paperwork comes direct to us and any queries regarding the club also come direct to us. We liaise regularly with our parents to ensure the smooth running of the club.

What if your club teacher is poorly?

We have a bank of supply teachers who step in to ensure the club continues to run smoothly if we have any staff sickness.

How are the clubs funded?

Our clubs are typically parent-paid at £10.50 per session, offering incredible value and convenience for small group literacy. We do also have some schools which fund the club using pupil premium funding or COVID catch up funding. Other schools use a mix of both and fund places for some children (eligible for FSM) whilst others are parent-paid.
